Understanding your skin
Dehydrated Skin
Dry and dehydrated skin can feel similar, but they have very different causes. Dry skin is a genetic, usually lifelong skin type that you are born with, caused by a lack of oil and lipid secretions within the skin.
Dehydration is a lack of water content and is something most people experience at some point. Both dry and oily skin can also be dehydrated. Signs can include flaky patches, tightness and fine criss-cross lines.
Treatment for dehydrated skin includes using hydrating active ingredients at home, such as hyaluronic acid.
Causes of dehydrated skin
- UV rays, extreme weather and central heating
- Hard water and hot showers or baths
- A poor skincare regime
- Hormonal changes and the ageing process
- Alcohol consumption, smoking, diet and lack of sleep
What you can do
- Reduce alcohol, caffeine and the use of harsh cleansers and exfoliators, as these can damage the skin barrier.
- Use the correct homecare consistently. Good daily skincare habits are essential if you want to transform your skin.
- Pay attention to nutrition. Fat-free diets can deprive the body of skin-friendly essential fatty acids.
- Protect the skin from UV exposure and extremes of temperature, and always use SPF.
- Keep well hydrated.
- Look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, cucumber and aloe. Try spritzing with Dermalogica Hyaluronic Ceramide Mist throughout the day.
